When apple harvest arrives, the boys immediately start asking if it's time for apple butter. The texture is like a thick and chunky applesauce, loaded with deliciously spicey flavor, which makes it perfect for their morning toast.
16 medium apples, peeled and chopped
3 cups sugar
1 cup apple cider
1 cup water
3 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Add all ingredients into a large cooking pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 45 minutes or until apples are soft and mashable. Mash with a potato masher until it reaches a consistency to your liking. Cook 4 minutes more, uncovered. Ladle mixture into clean, hot pint-sized canning jars, leaving a 1/4” headspace. Top with canning lids and rings and process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes. Makes 5 pints.

My 11 yr old daughter and I used your recipe this weekend and did 5 pints. My husband said it's the best he has ever tasted! Thanks for the new family favorite recipe. I think I am going to make this again and give them as Christmas gifts this year.

How exciting. I have never done anything like this-----ever.
Could you answer a few questions:
1. What kind of apples?
2. How long will this stay fresh and useable?
3. I have never done the canning process. Do you have any suggestions, lessons for someone new to canning and waterbaths?
Thanks so much,
Pat B.

I've never had apple butter that didn't have to cook for 24 hours before! While that kind is certainly delicious (like the essence of Fall), I'll have to try this too! Thanks for posting it!

My family and I love Apple Butter! Don't forget to add more time to the processing if you live at a higher altitude. Here in Salt Lake we need to add 10 minutes to most recipes to adjust for altitude. Check with your local Extension service for exact information. (That's my PSA for the day) ;D
