Whenever I receive a great business card I think about how I wish everyone could see it. And this week when I received another that was just so great, I thought to myself that I just had to do something about it. To tell the world.

The Glow

20081215_farmchicks_1677

Our family is settling in for our first Christmas in our new home.

Every day the anticipation almost takes over me. Anticipation for the day.

The day where the light pours into our happy home and its brightness fills me with cheer. I feel like there's so much that I can do. So much in the day.

When evening rolls around, I love the coziness that snuggles in around us inside our home. That feeling you get when the lights glow so sweetly and illuminate the house.

.        .      .           .        .               .     .      .         .

Sometimes I like to slip outside and soak in the glow. A glowing house is one of my favorite things in the world.

Like the farmhouse down the road, with its Christmas tree twinkling merrily through the front window. All is well there, in that twinkly home.

. .   .     .    .       .    .       .       .   .       .     .     .     .

When bedtime rolls around, I don't want to go. And I think about that good 'ol Johnny Cash song:

I was totin' my pack along the dusty Winnemucca road,
When along came a semi with a high an' canvas-covered load.
"If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride."
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand.
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"

It reminds me of where I've been, and just like the song, I've been everywhere, man. I've been everywhere.

.     .      .                     .           .            .          .        .

And now, I'm home.

      .            .             .      .      .                   .     .     .

Hang the mistletoe by the fire’s glow, put the angel on the tree.
Light a candle in the window, just for me.

Winter Blew In

Winter blew in this weekend and left me happy.

I've never been so happy to see snow. It seems like everything at home just feels right.

I stop and think about how my heart feels full several times a day. You know how you feel when you've been feeling so bad for so long and then you get better and everything just feels so happy and wonderful? I get teary just thinking about it.

I can't believe Thanksgiving is almost here. I love that day.

And the soundtrack of my life keeps playing in my mind. Today, it's my Winter Song. :)

Remembering Ann Caster

I often talk about my antiques show and the vendors who participate. We gather once a year, but stay connected throughout. I've watched their children grow, their dreams unfold, and been there throughout the ups and downs. Like family.

I remember getting to know Ann when she began participating in the show, back when we'd just moved it to Fairfield. I can still see her antiques spaces in my mind, and remember each one and why she'd moved from one to another. I admired her candor and witty personality and loved that her husband Andy was always by her side - one of the many couples I've grown to love over the years.

And I remember when I learned of Ann's battle with cancer and the wave of emotion that I felt that day. I didn't - and still don't - handle these struggles well.

This week I found myself struggling with the loss of Ann. What could I do?

And I was left with the only answer I know. To live my life and be the best I can be. To be thankful for the life and the family that's been given to me.

When I think about Ann, I can see her smile in my mind. The way she wrinkled up her nose and squinted her eyes when she smiled. And when I remember that, it makes me smile too.

.     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .

A Funeral Mass will be held in Ann's honor on November 18, at 11am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 3720 East Colbert Road Colbert, WA 99005, with a reception at the church immediately following the service.

11/1/11

Hi! Today feels like a new beginning for me. I'm happy to report that I'm slowly beginning to feel like myself again and I'm really thankful for that. Turns out recovering from surgery can be quite a bugger. Honestly, I'm ready to put the whole experience in the rearview mirror.

Today is 11/1/11. Doesn't that feel like a clean slate number? I sure think so. And with this date, I feel a renewed sense of energy and excitement for what's to come.

Health.

The holidays in our new home.

A Needle In A Haystack

Imagine it was day 2,000,592 of cold dark windy rainy snowy weather... *Oh wait* you can imagine because it's WINTER...  Anyway, imagine it was another long winter's day and you stop at the post office to discover there's so much mail you need a cart. Hooray! I. Love. Checking. The. Mail. (I think it goes back to my childhood and that being my only contact with the outside world).  ....

Then imagine, as you're digging through the boxes... you see this package:

IMG_6918  IMG_6919

Happy! Joyful! Springtime cheer!

So guess what, I marched right up to the counter to show my post office worker buddies the box. "Where's it from?", they asked. And not knowing, I flipped the box all around to see. "NEW JERSEY!" I exclaimed. "NEW JERSEY?!?!?!", they asked. And it was. And somehow, it made it all this way, across the U.S. to me in such darling condition.

And guess what was inside?

IMG_7005

Needles in a haystack. A HAYSTACK PINCUSHION!

And lots of other cute things, carefully crafted from my Farm Chicks patterns (as shared in my treatbag download and Farm Chicks logo materials from my website) Do you recognize my tractor and aprons?:

IMG_7006

IMG_7007

All an incredibly sweet surprise from the girls of Vintage Bettys, who love to make home crafts, just for fun.

I bet if you twist their arm, they might be willing to share a tutorial on how to make the haystack pincushion. Wouldn't that be the best? It's my favorite pincushion ever.

Thank you, Vintage Bettys.

P.S. This reminds me.... I get asked about this a lot... About using my copyrighted patterns or logos...

All of my materials are copyrighted. When a pattern or project is shared, you are welcome to use those for your own personal use. They just can't be used for resale. (Items bearing my patterns or designs cannot be sold). And if you happen to use my materials on your website or blog, please make sure to link back to my website as the source for your project.

And I would do the same for you.

Santa Claus

The Farm Chicks Christmas 026-2

Christmas is in the air in our house.  Each morning the boys open their Advent Calendars and count down another day to Christmas and every night is filled with the Cinnamon Bear.  These traditions are so special to our family and I know that they will always be remembered (and possibly carried on) by the boys.

Santa Claus is special for me at Christmastime.  I have such fond memories of laying in my sleeping bag as a girl, wondering where he was at that moment.  Would he find me, in the middle of nowhere?  And he always did.

I thought I'd share this poem to fill your day with Christmas thoughts...

Old Santa Claus puts on his cap

And buckles it under his chin.

He laughs and sings as he fills his sack

And straps it over his sturdy back.

"I'll crowd all I can within.

For girls and boys, such pretty toys -

I've dolls and drums and sugarplums

For all little girls and boys."

Old Santa Claus has reindeer brown

And a sleigh with silver bells.

He rides over all the roofs in town

And stops at the chimney and rattles down

And this pleasant story tells:

"Christmas is here, with gladsome cheer,

And here are toys for girls and boys -

I've dolls and drums and sugarplums,

For all little girls and boys."

Sur Le Plat

I've come to realize that I love a theme.  I always have.  This week, it's eggs.

IMG_4210

And I have a fascination with languages and how words and phrases are translated from one language to another.   On our recent trip to St. Martin, we tried to order fried eggs for breakfast, but we weren't able to describe it in French.  Round and round we went until our waitress finally responded, "Oh! Sur le plat!"  On the plate?, Colin asked, puzzled.

IMG_4214

And yes indeed, it was one in the same.  And I swear their fried eggs are better than ours and I think I know why.  White pepper, (not black), and salt.  Understated seasoning, to really let the delicious egg flavor shine through.

Aren't eggs the best?  I'm going to be writing about them all week...

P.S. I know you're going to ask about my darling little egg carton.  Isn't it the cutest?  I spotted it when I opened the fridge in St. Martin and it was so cute that I asked everyone to please make sure not to throw it away when the eggs were all used up.  But guess what?  It got thrown away by mistake.  So I went to several markets in St. Martin until I could find another.  Crazy, I know.

Answers - From Behind the Scenes

IMG_9661
(The scene at my house during the shoot for my upcoming Christmas book)

I've had fun reading your questions on my life behind the scenes at The Farm Chicks.  I've combined the Facebook and blog questions all here in one place.

Q: I'd like to hear more about your childhood.  Were you happy and are your parents still living the same lifestyle?

A: I didn't enjoy living remotely and primitively as a teenager (I didn't mind it as a young girl) and wished more than anything to have a normal house, close to my friends.  However, now that I'm grown, I'm thankful to have experienced that lifestyle because it made me a very strong and determined person and I give thanks every day for the modern conveniences of my life now.  My parents still live on our 40 acres deep in the woods, and continue to live primitively.

Q: Are you planning on writing a memoir?

A: No, I have no plans to write a memoir at this time, if ever.  I enjoy writing about my upbringing from time to time on my blog.

Q: How did you end up in Alaska?

A: There were lots of people from my little hometown that were living and working there, and I desperately wanted to experience life outside of the tiny town I grew up in.

Q: Do you or have you ever lived on a farm?

A: No, I came up with The Farm Chicks name after being invited onto several old farms to buy out the contents when we were just getting started with our business.  Since we were obtaining so many beautiful old farm pieces, it sort of became our specialty and that, combined with our deep love of the American farm is where The Farm Chicks name came from.

Q: Where do you live? What does your house look like?  What will your new house look like?

A: We live outside of Spokane, Washington, in the country.  Our house is on the prairie, surrounded by thousands of acres of wheat fields.  We have a modest home that has a huge kitchen and is filled with light.  Very open and airy.  Our new house will be a farmhouse, nestled in the Greenbluff area, not far from our current home.

Q: Did you find a house plan? When do you start building your new house?

A: We have been working with a wonderful architect, Nancy McKennon, for a few months now.  We're almost done with the design and hope to start building in the spring.

Q: Have you found a sink yet?

A: I've been looking for the perfect farmhouse sink for a while now and still have not found it.  I know it's out there!

Q: Describe your home decorating style.  Do you change your wall color often?

A: When we first moved into our house, we painted the living room walls red and I loved it for a couple of years.  However, I tend to gravitate toward bright, happy colors and I didn't like the chaos of a red wall and bright objects.  I've since painted our living room walls pale blue and like that much more.

Q: Is there a way to mix decorating styles?

A: Yes, of course! One of my favorite decorating books is Camps and Cottages.  I love how the campy style and floral styles are mixed together throughout the book.  When combining different styles, I think it's important to be selective with what you place in your home.  Not to overdo it.  Otherwise, it can start to look like a flea market.

Q: What is your most prized possession?

A: I've thought a lot about this and I think it would have to be all of our family photographs.  Nothing else comes to mind.  When my childhood home burned down, I was most devastated by the loss of family pictures.

Q: Do you have a problem with wallpaper in your laundry room?

A: No, I've never had a problem with the wallpaper.  The dryer is properly ventilated, so there's no moisture in the room.  I love seeing the bright and cheery walls whenever I walk in there!

Q: Do you have any tips on nice ways to store items found in the bathroom?

A: My parents always kept soap and shampoo in beautiful old glass bottles and then topped them with corks.  I don't mind seeing the shampoo bottles, but I do like to keep Q-Tips, cotton balls, and band-aids in old apothecary jars.

Q: What is the least organized space in your home?

A: My house is really organized at this point in my life.  When the boys were younger, being organized was much more of a challenge.  But now that I have more time to get things done, I've made it a point to have things orderly.  I don't like chaos.  I'd have to say my car is the least organized.  It's a jungle in there! :)

Q: Do you have a planner? Routine? How do you stay on top of things?

A: I do have a planner, but I often forget to check it.  I have to force myself.  However, we do have a great daily routine during the week that works really well for us.  I stay on top of things by not over-scheduling our lives and not having our children do so many activities that it becomes more of a chore than a joy for them and our family.

Q: How do you find time to do crafts while raising children?

A: Unless I'm working on a project with the boys, I usually do all of my crafting during the day while they're at school, or on the weekend.

Q: How do you promote the interests of each of your sons?

A: Each of our boys are very different from one another, and have their own unique interests.  We encourage them to explore what they're interested in such as music, art, legos, sports, etc.  And we also make a point in not only spending time together as a family, enjoying these things, but we also make sure to have some quality time with each of them one on one as well.

Q: Do you menu plan?  What are your favorite sites for recipes?

A: Yes, I make a menu for each week and make a grocery list off of that menu.  I keep a menu board with all of the options for the week on the board.  At about 3pm each day, I choose a recipe off of my menu, based on what sounds good to me that day.  That way, I'm never stuck trying to figure out what to make for dinner and it saves me lots of time by not having to visit the grocery store too often.  I enjoy using recipes from Giada's cookbooks, Everyday Food, and occasional magazine recipes that catch my eye.  And I love to experiment with dinners that sound good in my mind.

Q:  What's your favorite recipe to make for dinner?

A: The dinner recipe that my family currently loves the most is the turkey soup from our cookbook.  And probably because it's so nice for a winter meal.  However, the favorites change frequently around here.

Q: Where did you find the gingham topped jars shown in your pantry post?

A: The gingham jars are vintage, I found them at a thrift shop.

Q: What is your favorite thrift store in Spokane?

A: My favorite right now are the Union Gospel Mission thrift shops (formerly named Classy Rack).

Q: How do you find out about estate sales in Spokane?

A: Mostly by reading the classifieds in the Spokesman Review and in the Exchange.  Sometimes I hear about sales from friends or someone in the community who will contact me to tell me about something coming up.

Q: What is your favorite website for antiques?

A: Etsy and Ebay.

Q: How can I market my Etsy site?

A: I'm definitely no expert on Etsy, but here are some suggestions.  I'd start a blog and reach out to anyone who might be interested in what I'm selling.  I'd tell all of my friends and family and ask them to spread the word as well.  I'd make sure to have interesting photographs and update my inventory frequently to keep shoppers interested in what I have to offer.

Q: Can you offer advice to someone starting a blog?

A: The first thing you should do is read the book Blogging For Bliss.  It's packed with really useful information.

Q: Do you have a mentor?

A: I've never had a mentor until recently.  I've begun a new project with The Farm Chicks (I can't wait to tell you about it soon!) and a dear friend of mine, who I wrote about in the cookbook, Elaine, has been an incredible mentor to me.  She is a wonderful woman who I cherish.  I look forward to talking more about her in the future.

Q: Are you planning another book?

A: Yes, the next book (A Christmas book!) will be out in the fall.

Q: Do you ever get creative block?

A: Yes, definitely.  I've learned when this happens that I just need a break for a while.  Creativity, for me, can never be forced.  I love visiting unfamiliar places and seeing new sights.  That always inspires me.

Q: Do you have plans to travel to other states or take The Farm Chicks Show to other states?

A: I do travel for business with The Farm Chicks from time to time.  I will be in Minneapolis in September, taking part in the Creative Connection.  I have no plans on taking The Farm Chicks Show to any other locations.

Q: What is the deadline to apply for The Farm Chicks Show?

A: You can apply for the show at any time throughout the year.  Whenever there are vendor openings, they are filled on a first come, first served basis.

Q: What is your favorite place to shop for clothing and accessories?

A: I have several favorites.  Bodenusa.com for clothes and shoes, Forever 21 for clothes and accessories, Target for accessories, Nordstrom for clothes, shoes, and accessories, and Anthropologie for clothes and accessories.

Q: Can you describe your pie crust?

A: My favorite pie crust, adapted from my mother-in-law's recipe, is available in our cookbook, as well as on the Country Living website.

A Little Love

I'm at the post office a lot.  In fact, I feel like it's Cheers every time I walk into the lobby.  We're all on a first name basis there.  "Shipping more books today?", Frank will ask.  Or "You've got a package."  And I love it. And opening my box to find little surprises is such a treat.  And that's exactly how I felt when a set of the most darling hand towels arrived, made by Teresa, complete with The Farm Chicks apron logo.

IMG_2396

I was lucky enough to meet Teresa when she became a vendor at The Farm Chicks Show and became a part of the Farm Chicks family.  She's a wonderfully sweet and creative woman.  And just the other day, I happened to hear that her husband had suffered a heart attack and it's been such a hard time for her family.  And it made me so sad to know that they are having this hard time.

And then I learned that another of my sweet vendors, Coleen, was facing hardships of her own as her husband's cancer has returned.

I wish I could make everything better for them.  And although I can't do much, I can let them know that I'm thinking of them, that I care.  And although you don't know them or their husbands, I'm hoping you can too. Because wouldn't it be nice for them to find sweet notes in their mailboxes too?

If you have a minute, I'd love it if you'd send them a note.  You can email Teresa here and Coleen here.

All we need is love.

Chris (Part 2)

First of all, I have to say that Chris is one of my favorite artists of all time.  Her paintings are just beautiful and oftentimes depict our local Spokane area.  I just about died when I saw a piece she did on downtown Spokane from quite a few years ago - complete with lots of great cars in the parking lot.  It's my favorite so far.  But she is truly amazing at everything she does.  And as you'll see, she loves quilting.  Here are some shots from my visit yesterday.  (And you can see one of her paintings in the background in the photo below).

She's even used the doll quilts as placemats from time to time.

Oh my gosh - I love this.....It's hard to read, but what she does with the unfinished quilts she rescues and completes is that she signs each one (in stitch) as follows:
Ann Onymous - Pieced  (get it?)
C.E. Druffel-Lynch - quilted
(her name)
2008
(year of completion)

And as I've mentioned before, Chris and her sisters hold a couple of sales each year in Spokane.  Tons of vintage, antique and homemade items.  We'll be sure to let you know when the next one is and will share pictures of Carrie's house and the last sale we went to.  Can you even stand it?!

Sister Sister

It's been an overload of sisterly love for me lately.  First, getting to spend a great weekend with my sister and then today, getting to spend the day with my friends, the sisters (I've mentioned before) and some other friends too.  Today started out as so busy - zipping here and there and a business meeting too.  It was so nice to head to Chris's house for an amazing lunch and good conversation.  I'll post more about my visit tomorrow, but I wanted to show you what we were treated to for lunch:

Fresh Fruit:

Oh, and here's our hostess, Chris:

I can't even tell you how delicious everything was.  And all homemade.  Just like sisters do.
