Personal Favorites

Do you remember the Business Card Contest I held recently? That was fun! I thought I'd share these cards that I've saved from my travels and Farm Chicks business. I do love a great business card!

Fall Favorites

Adding a few special things to your seasonal wardrobe is like a little pick-me-up. A "Happy Day To Me, From Me" sort of treat. Here is what I'm loving for fall:

Fall

1: Sonia Kashuk Velvety Matte Lip Crayon - I love the look of a stained lip. Not overly made up, but lovely, nonetheless. And, yes, it feels velvety, not dry like a normal lipstain. I love this stuff! My fave? Mulberry Nude. $7.99 at Target.

2: Maybelline Express Finish polish. I love how quickly this polish dries. Perfect shade for my toes: Mocha Blast. $3.49 at Target.

3: Maybelline Express Finish polish. I like the shade Ivory in Seconds for my hands. $3.49 at Target.

4. Aviators (on the cheap!) Let me say that I've owned really expensive sunglasses and really inexpensive ones and the expensive ones break and get lost just as easily as the cheap ones. My vote? Wal-Mart $4.99.

5. Minnetonka moccasins. If you're going to buy moccasins, don't go cheap. I think Minnetonkas are the best, and aren't they just the cutest for fall? I got mine for a great deal: $29 at TJ Maxx. (Normal retail is $45, but well worth it).

Note: I was not paid to endorse these items. I just happen to enjoy them.

Floral Fashion

Floral fashion (English roses, especially) is the big trend this year. You're going to see it everywhere. But floral and fashion can go wrong quickly if you're not careful. You don't want to look like grandma's comforter, do you? The key is to not overdo it. Just a touch of floral here and there. Here are some of my favorites:

A Short Novel About Fashion

Thank goodness my sister was into fashion.  She used to order us Esprit catalogs which we'd pour over, learning what was cool at the moment.  When we were done with them, we'd pull the pages out and hang them on the walls of the little travel trailer she and I shared as our bedrooms.  It opened my eyes to a beautiful world I never knew existed.  I thought being a fashion model would be amazing, but I was going through an awkward phase, so I set my sights on being a hand model.

When I was in fourth grade, my family moved deep into the woods outside of the small Northern California town of Yreka. I loved when we'd get to make the trip into town and I could gaze in the windows of my favorite store, Directions.  The window displays were always done by a beautiful woman named Yoni, who I admired very much.  When I got older, I would pick her brain about how she created those amazing displays.  And it's definitely where I learned to appreciate a good display, especially one with cute merchandise.

My mom eventually took a job at a shop in town called the Second Hand Rose, which sold used clothing. It was like a dream come true for me because I got to be in charge of window displays.  And sometimes, there wasn't as good of a selection as other times, so I learned to be resourceful with outfit displays, leaning on a few good key pieces to pull the looks together.

Along the way, I met my uncle who was a very successful doctor in San Francisco and I began to visit him on holidays.  He shopped in wonderful department stores like Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue and would take me there to shop, carte blanche.  It was a shocking experience for me, as his world and mine could not have been more different.  Now I could have the Esprit outfits I had only seen on my travel trailer bedroom walls, never even imagining that one day they could possibly be mine.

When I was just beginning my life as an adult, I'd still order fashion catalogs and would fill out huge orders on the order forms, sometimes taking several days at a time before I was done.  Once complete, I'd tuck them away and wait for the next season's catalogs to arrive.  For many years I wasn't able to place the orders, but the process made me happy.  Like I was in touch with fashion.

I still love seeing each season's collections and look forward to every catalog that arrives.  Each season (I break it up by spring/summer and fall/winter) I try to think about one main color I'm going to build my wardrobe around so that everything works well together and my dollar goes farther.  For spring/summer this year, I'm loving navy blue.  And so many colors look great with Navy.

From Boden.  Wouldn't this be a cute start to my navy spring/summer? :

The Original Cake Flags

Il_570xN.194208609

A few months back, I had this great idea to create little flags for cakes, based on my love of old cake flag picks and thought, why not make a bunch of them for a cake?  And for cupcakes?

When I posted my Cake Flag Project, a reader led me to the Kiki La Ru shop on etsy for some similar flags.  And I was smitten.

Il_570xN.194208613

So, I posted a link to her darling flags.

Il_570xN.172718893

And then, just like that, I heard from Dawn, of Kiki La Ru, who had coincidentally just made my pie crust recipe with her husband the weekend before.

And did I mention she lives in Austria?

Small world.

Il_570xN.180320710

This Christmas, these darling little flags are just the sort of things I'm looking for.  Wonderful handmade creations that are completely my style.  I love finding special things made by special people, like Dawn.

Il_570xN.190976364

I'm doing my best to support small businesses out there and I'm always looking for adorable new things to share with you, my readers.

Do you know of something adorable that you think is especially "Farm Chickey"?!  I'd love for you to tell me about it.  You can email me anytime:  mail (at) thefarmchicks.com

Il_570xN.194208440

And in the meantime, I do hope you'll go and visit my new friend, Dawn, and patronize her shop.  She ships all over the world.  And who in the world doesn't need a cute new cake flag for Christmas?!

One of my favorite things to collect are beautiful old black and whites capturing the American farm.  These beautiful images move me more than I can ever explain.  To me, it's one of the most fantastic pieces of our history ~ these families who worked so hard to make our land the beautiful country it is today.

Hens

When I discovered the book, A Bountiful Harvest by Leslie Loveless, I fell in love.  So much so that I made a point of seeking her out and talking to her about what she'd created, all from an extensive collection of old photographs by Pete Wettach that she'd recently discovered.  With permission from the Iowa historical society who now owns the collection, I used several of the images on past postcards for The Farm Chicks Show.  These images shown here, all from the book seemed so fitting for my egg week.

IMG

The discovery of the photos happened by chance when Leslie, an employee at the historical society discovered some of the negatives in boxes during an office move.  After much research, she located the rest of the collection at the home of Mr. Wettach's son, a collection of over 50,000 photographs, all wonderfully preserved for all these years.  The book is one of my all-time favorites.

And if you love documentaries as much as me, the story was turned into The People in the Pictures, by PBS.  And yes, I own a copy of that too.  I love it that much.

Heather Bullard

Okay, before you read on, please be warned that what you are about to see is going to cause some serious envy and you may stay awake at night wondering how on earth anything this AMAZING is even possible.  Seriously, don't say I didn't warn you.....

That's right, it's a CHICKEN COOP!  Heather Bullard Style.

And after I got over the initial shock of how completely amazing her new chicken coop is, I realized wouldn't expect anything less from Heather and her sweet husband.  They create the most beautiful things.

Wouldn't you just love to gather the eggs from this coop every day?  It would just make me smile.  But Heather always makes me smile.

Place

I was touched by Holly's post yesterday on Decor8, talking about her move to a new country and finally finding her place in the world.  I totally get that and love that we all have a place that's special for us, or is still out there for us to find.  It made me reflect on an Andrew Wyeth exhibition my family and I went to see at the Seattle Art Museum recently.  A quote of his moved me:

"I couldn't get any of this feeling without a very strong connection for a place.  Really, I think one's art goes only as far and as deep as your love goes.  I don't paint these hills around Chadds Ford because they are better than the hills somewhere else.  It's that I was born here, lived here - things have meaning for me."  ~Andrew Wyeth

I've been waiting to tell you about her because I wanted her website to be up and running so you could buy her cute things if you wanted.  And now it is!  And you know what else?  Her business has the cutest name ever:  Spoon!  And, it turns out she makes quilts too.  An apron and quiltmaker.  I think that probably makes her one of the happiest girls on earth!

Muncha-a-Buncha!

Brittle We've been munching and crunching around our house lately, since we stocked up on one of our favorite treats from the showAnoka Farms Brittle.  Oh. My. Goodness.  It is amazingly terrificly scrumptiously delicious.  And what I love even more about it is that it's a tiny mom and pop business, created by Stephen and Shelly, using her grandmother's recipe.  And I love how they honor the memory of her grandparents and their farm on Pleasant Prairie, which is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from me.

And as we've been munching and crunching, it occurred to me that I just had to do a post about it before Father's Day because it would make the best gift for that special day.  Really.

My favorite is Chocolate Dipped. I wonder what yours will be?  Let me know!

Back to 4th Grade

Yesterday was a youthful day.  After a haircut from the best stylist ever, she surprised me with a little gift:

Gifts 001

Cute, right?  And it opens up to reveal two little tubs of lip gloss.  It reminded me of my 4th grade year, when all my friends had themed lip glosses, which I adored, but was unable to afford.  Now I have my very own!  Thanks, Annie!

Gifts 006

And later, with lips glossed, my friend Stacey and I made it to the Kellie Pickler/Taylor Swift concert, where we were surrounded by little girls who would probably love my new lip gloss just as much as me.

Cuckoo for the Cuckoo Clock

Cuckoo Turns out, many of you love my cuckoo clock as much as I do.  I saw the clock at Pottery Barn Kids and watched it all season, not really wanting to pay as much as they were asking.  Luckily for me, my watching paid off and they put it on clearance at the end of the season.  I love love love it because the little bird pokes its head out the window and chirps every hour.  You can make it as quiet as you like.  Colin was a little apprehensive when I hung it in the kitchen, as he was sure that little bird was going to drive him, well....cuckoo!  I turned the volume down pretty low and it's the cutest thing ever.  And I'm not kidding, every single time the little birdy appears, softly chirping, the boys stop what they're doing and say, "cuckoo clock!  cuckoo clock!", which Colin and I think is one of the cutest darn things in the whole world.
I've received emails asking where I got the clock and was sad to see on their website that it's no longer available.  When answering another email about the clock this morning, I decided to take a look at ebay....just in case.  And lucky day!  I discovered there's one for sale on there now!  You can find it here.  It ends in just four days....

Hi Friends! It's me, Serena.

E serena

At the end of every school year, I'd say goodbye to all of my friends for the summer and head for home, which was deep in the mountains of Siskiyou County, California.  It was a lot like losing contact with the world for those few months.  When I'd return to school, I felt a lot like the new kid, like I needed to introduce myself to everyone once again.  And although I loved summer, reading for hours on end, wild strawberry picking, and the occasional visits to the swimming hole, I craved news from my best friend, Lisa.  Since we had no telephone, I had to rely on letters from her.  And each time one would arrive, it was the best thing I could ever imagine.  A gift in my mailbox.

Prettyclub When my BFF Jordan (Okay, I don't actually even know her, but if I did, I know I'd love her) recently announced her Pretty Little Things Club, I had to sign up.  I have no idea what she'll be sending every month, but I know it will be lovely.  So, every month, I'll be waiting for my mail from Jordan.  It won't contain any news, just something sweet.  The best thing I could ever imagine.

I'm Serena, mom of 4, author, entrepreneur, & Country Living Magazine contributing editor. I consider myself the luckiest girl in the world and I write about it all here, on my blog.
