Last week the radiant floor heating tubes were installed in the basement. We've grown to love radiant heat, which, simply put, warms the floors in your home, and performs as the heat source.
The tubes are installed over insulation and are then encased in concrete or Gyp-Crete. The tubes will eventually have warm water pumping through them, which will heat the concrete and create cozy floors. I've always suffered from incredibly cold hands and feet so this type of heat is a real treat for me.
Once the basement floors are poured, we'll move on to the framing this week. We're looking forward to seeing it take shape!

You've definitley got me at radiant heat!! I'm even a tinge jealous. As both an architectural designer and a fellow Eastern Washingtonian I am so enthralled with the posts about your home! Ok, not to mention your style, I mean there is a reason I follow your fabulous blog!
When I finally breakdown and do hardwoods in my little house, I will be adding radiant heat. Being cold is the worst! So excited to see the continued progress of your beautiful home.

Can't wait to see more!!!
I think the heat is very important. My house is very warm in winter and cold in summer :)

Oh my Great Grandma's house has those types of floors and I loved them as a child. After dinner if you looked around the living room everyone would be asleep on the floor lol!

I just noticed that my bare feet are chilled... :) I think I'd like radiant floor, too.
Enjoy!!

I don't know about you, but this seems to be going really quickly! Super exciting!

Our house was built 15 years ago in the middle of what used to be crop ground. No windbreaks, just constant wind. And since the house faces north (why did we do this?) the winters are brutal. Even worse, our master bath is above the garage. You can imagine how cold the floor is during the winter. Just a quick 3am trip to the toilet can be agonizing!
I've been wanting to try this radiant heat if we ever get around to remodeling-both as a heat resource, and because central heat/air seems so inconsistant and pumps out tons of dust. I'm so ready for a change, and I hope I can get hubby on board with it.
Your house is coming along nicely. Thanks so much for taking us with you as it is being built!

We have it in our basement as well. Love it!! Everyone is perplexed when walking on the tiled floor and walking on "warm" spots. Makes all the difference!!

I LOVE radiant heating. Wish I had it. I am curious to know, what happens if one of the tubes break or the heating stops working for some reason? Do you have to tear up all the concrete?

We love our radiant heat. We have it on our main floor and the upper bathroom floors. I will miss it when our house sells. (it is still for sale :)

Have you had radiant heat in the past? We are considering it for our house, and it scares me. What if one of the tubes leaks and we have to break up the whole floor to find the hole in the tube?

Hi there,
We do currently have radiant heat in our home and would never ever go without it again. It is so comfortable and wonderful.
When we built our current house, we actually had a problem with a hole in one of the tubes, due to an incident during building. They snaked a camera down through the lines, chipped out a 12" circle around the area, fixed the tube, and we've never had a problem again.
Our incident is really rare. However, I will say this...if you decide to go with radiant heat, definitely go with the most reputable contractor that's out there. Don't try to find someone who does it cheaply.
Best wishes,
Serena
