Milk glass is an all-time favorite collectible of mine. I love how such a simplistic color can be beautiful in an understated sort of way.
Last fall, I stumbled upon this collection of milk glass hen dishes at a barn sale on the prairie, near my home. I paid $30 for the set of 8.
I'm drawn to the older pieces that appear opalescent in light:
It's collections like these that add another layer of specialness to our family holiday celebrations. I look forward to using my new collection this Easter and for many years to come.

My grandma used to have ones like these and blue ones that were bunnies and she would put them out filled with Jelly Beans for the kids to eat every Easter.

Love your chicks! I have a huge collection of covered hens dishes in all shapes, sizes and colors. I have several of the ones you show, and for a dinner party you can take them and put fresh ground salt and pepper in each one and set it at each place setting. A cute, useful table decoration!

Those hens are so cute! The glass is very beautiful and exquisite. I like how it's got a pure white milky color but yet some parts are so thin that they appear translucent. Very pretty.

I love the simplicity of the milk glass...and the multitude of shapes giving a multitude of uses! I have around 20 pieces...I change them out from time to time to show off the entire collection. The hen is beautiful...

Cute! My mother's also collecting those ever since I was a kid. And now that she is happily retired, she enjoys collecting different vintage pieces across the globe.

Can you please tell me what the purpose of these hens were? We have a display in the library and I just know nothing about them.
